It Ain't Over Till It's Over...and It's Over

When we started today's UltimateBet Online Championship Main Event there were only 5 players who still had a chance to be our Perfect 10 Champion, and thus earn the right to play Phil Hellmuth in a $10,000 heads-up match. Before yesterday's H.O.R.S.E. event it looked as though rps5000, who held the lead most of this week, might be able to clinch the title early. But several players went deep in last night's tournament and put themselves within striking distance.

All the players in pursuit had to do was hack their way through 1,400 other players and reach the last 2 or 3 tables, while hoping that rps5000 didn't make a deep run himself. That's all.

Well, it simply wasn't meant to be for the four chasing the leader. WiscoMurray no doubt hoped to continue the momentum from last night, when he placed 2nd in the H.O.R.S.E. event and moved into the top 5. But he was one of the first poker players knocked out today, going home in 1345th place. Another would-be challenger, robertv77, was also bounced early in 1237th place.

The Top Three on the leaderboard outlasted more than half the field, but it illustrates the monumental task these players faced when knet_poker went out in 541st place, a long, long way from picking up a single Leaderboard point.

Our leader went out shortly thereafter in 455th place, and so it came down to awobball44, who needed to finish in 74th place to win the title outright. It was a long, long road he faced, but sadly he didn't survive long enough on that road. awobball44 was knocked out in 380th place, and that ended all challenges.

And so we congratulate rps5000, who is our Perfect 10 Champion and will face Phil Hellmuth in a heads-up battle for $10,000. When that match is announced we'll of course let you know the time and date and provide gavel-to-gavel coverage.
